The Atkins Diet
The Atkins diet hit the diet scene in 1972 when Dr. Atkins published his book, “Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution”. And the Atkins diet was really revolutionary. Most diets of the day focused on counting calories and maintaining a low fat diet. Calories were felt to be the enemy and the fewer you ate, the better off you were. Dr. Atkins paid less attention to calories in his diet and more to reducing the number of carbohydrates in the diet. To followers of his diet, the carbohydrates were the problem. The diet promoted the use of lots of protein and a moderate amount of fat with the idea that your metabolism will cause you to lose weight on this diet.
The Atkins diet was not taken very well by many nutritionists who were promoting diets low in fat and protein. This was about the time that the four food groups turned into the food pyramid. Fruits, vegetables and grains were near the bottom and should be consumed the most. Unfortunately for the Atkins diet, these were things that were to be avoided on the diet. Near the top of the food pyramid are fats and meat proteins. We weren’t supposed to eat many of these types of foods on a healthy diet and yet they were prominent in the Atkins diet.
The Atkins diet included menu plans high in bacon, fried meat and even fried pork rinds. While there were some salad greens on the diet plan, you were allowed to add fatty dressing to the diet plan. The Atkins diet plan really promoted eggs, cheese, meats at every meal and, in some cases, protein bars or protein drinks. This was a time when cholesterol and triglycerides were being better understood and their role in heart disease was made more clear. Experts felt that the Atkins diet plan was too high in cholesterol and other fats, making one’s risk for heart disease greater. Dr. Atkins continued to promote his diet plan, amid a great deal of controversy.
The Atkins diet also included some Atkins products, like Atkins hot cereal, Atkins protein shakes and Atkins protein bars. Instead of having regular hot cereal, you would choose the Atkins variety of hot cereal. The company made money off of these specialized products and still does, but to a lesser degree. As long as carbohydrates were counted and Atkins products used, the diet was expected to help you lose weight.
It’s unclear how successful people were in losing weight on the Atkins diet. If dieting is truly based on calories, the Atkins diet certainly weren’t lacking in them. Since the origin of the Atkins diet, more is known about the effects of cholesterol (from meat protein) and triglycerides (from other fats) on things like stroke, peripheral artery disease and heart disease (coronary artery disease). Doctors are more likely to check cholesterol and triglycerides in patients and doctors are active in putting people on medications to lower these fats in the blood. Few doctors would recommend such a high content of cholesterol and fat for patients at risk for heart disease. Few would recommend this kind of diet for even normal people. Still, there are those who still go on the Atkins diet in the hopes of losing weight.
Choosing The Right Size Fish Tank
Have you recently decided that you would like to take up fish keeping as a hobby? If so, have you already developed of collection of fish to display in your home or in your office? Regardless of which type of fish you would like to purchase, you will need to buy an aquarium, if you haven’t already done so. Unfortunately, when it comes to purchasing a fish tank, there are many individuals who make a costly mistake. That mistake is purchasing a fish tank that it is too small. In addition to wasting money, by purchasing a fish tank that isn’t want you need, you may also be endangering the lives of your fish. That is why it is extremely important that you choose the right fish tank for your fish and their needs.
When it comes to choosing the right size fish tank, you may find it a little bit difficult to do your own research. Despite being difficult, it is possible to do. For example, you can examine the type of fish that you would like to purchase, namely their overall size and their swimming habits. If you purchase a type of fish that is expected to grow in size or one that likes to swim all over the tank, you are advised to purchase a large fish tank. A large fish tank, such as a large acrylic aquarium, will give your fish the room that they need to swim, socialize, and grow. If you are unsure as to what size aquarium you should purchase, it may be best to seek professional assistance.
When it comes to obtaining professional assistance, when choosing the right size fish tank, you have a number of different options. One of those options involves speaking to the individual who you are purchasing your fish from. Most fish store employees are educated on the fish that they have available for sale, as well as their needs. It is also possible for you to acquire the same type of information by speaking to a fish tank supplier or a fish tank manufacturer. This is because there are some manufacturers who develop fish tanks specifically for a certain type of fish. That is why most fish tank manufacturers, as well as their suppliers, are more than familiar with most fish and the tank sizes that they need.
Although it is advised that you keep your fish in mind, when choosing which size fish tank you need to purchase, you may also want to think big. If you are unable to find the answers to your questions, as to what size aquarium you need to purchase, you may have better luck going with a large, oversized aquarium. When many fish keepers think of oversized a 1000 gallon fish tank comes to mind. In reality, a 1000 gallon fish tank is huge. In fact, these 1000 gallon fish tanks, which are often referred to as ultaquariums, are sometimes only sold as custom built aquariums.
For those are just starting to experiment with the fish keeping hobby, 50 to 100 gallon fish tanks are often considered the most sought after or most purchased sized aquariums. This is because smaller fish tanks are more affordable than larger fish tanks, such as a 150 gallon fish tank or a 300 gallon fish tank. However, as previously mentioned, you are advised to keep your fish in mind. If you have your heart set on purchasing large tropical fish, a 50 to 100 gallon fish tank may not be enough room. What is nice about aquariums is that they come in a number of different sizes, shapes, and styles. There are so many different sizes, including 50 gallon fish tanks, 90 gallon fish tanks, 100 gallon fish tanks, and 300 gallon fish tanks, that you are sure to find exactly what you need.
To ensure that your fish are living as comfortably as they possibly can, you need to make sure that you are about to purchase or did purchase the correct size aquarium. The wrong size aquarium, especially if it is too small, can have dangerous and deadly consequences for your new pets.
The Maqui Berry: From Traditional Indigenous Remedy to Modern Antioxidant Superpower
Among the vast landscape of towering glaciers, snow-capped mountains and sun-sprinkled islands that make up the Patagonia region, live a tribe of indigenous Indians called the Mapuche. The Mapuche represent ten percent of Chile’s population and remain the only unconquered group of Native American Indians. Their unmatched strength and stamina in battle has been legendary for generations and has been said to be responsible for their historic victories over the Inca and Spaniards. What is the source of the Mapuche brawn? Legend has it that they owe their celebrated strength and energy to a small, native berry called Maqui.
Regarded as sacred by the Mapuche, Maqui is a deep purple fruit that grows exclusively in Patagonia. An essential part of the tribe’s ancient medical practices, it is used both for its nourishment and healing ability.
The Maqui berry was recently found in clinical testing to hold the highest levels of antioxidants of any known natural food in the world. Antioxidants including anthocyanins and polyphenols are essential in fighting free radicals in the body known to cause cancer and other ailments. Now aided by the Novelle Corporation, which exclusively employs Mapuches to harvest Maqui, the Mapuche will be able to share their precious berry with the world.
While the trend of antioxidant supplements is not new, the industry thus far has been tainted by the poor business practices of Acai – a company currently in litigation for a misleading ad campaign. The spamming and misinformation spouted by Acai has understandably created a cloud of mistrust concerning this type of supplement. However, with Maqui the message is clean from ethical indiscrepancies and the fruit in fact features a far greater health infusion. With two to three times the antioxidant levels than that of Acai the proof is in the putting, or in this case a capsule. Also available in powder and liquid form, Maqui Superberry retails for $39.95.
A recent social media buzz about Maqui has begun to build on platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. People are reporting benefits ranging from an increase in energy to healing injuries and improving health deficiencies such as autism. Though a widespread groundswell of popularity may only now be growing, the Mapuche Indians have needed no tweets of encouragement to stick to what they know: Maqui is one powerful berry. Oprah Diet – She Rates Acai as Number 1 Superfood
Before we actually dive into the amazing world of health related breakthroughs and diets, we must first define what a super food really is. In a nutshell, a superfood is the type of food that is able to provide all or most of the nutrients and minerals that our bodies need in order to function properly and maintain a healthy metabolism, in other words, a superfood will always deliver the maximum nutritional punch in comparison with the rest of the foods which need to be complemented in order to provide the nutritional value found in super foods.
Expert studies
Dr. Nicholas Perricone (MD), a professor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine has conducted several studies in order to determine which the foods and natural products are able to deliver maximum benefits to our skin, Dr. Perricone is a dermatologist who has taken upon himself the difficult but rewarding task of finding natural products that will do more than just keeping our skin healthy.
Dr. Perricone has been the author of several books but, one of his most recent publications has caught the attention of the media mainly because it provides a very useful list of foods which are able to deliver the maximum nutritional value our bodies need and at the same time promote good overall health, that publication is called the Perricone Promise.
Oprah Winfrey and Media Coverage
Because of the intense research and useful information found in the Perricone Promise Oprah Winfrey featured Perricone’s book on her show which gave it national syndication, amongst the many super foods that Dr. Perricone mentions in his book, the one that caught everyone’s attention was the super food mentioned as the number one, Acai berry.
Acai is a berry which grows at the top of certain palm trees which can only be found at the Amazonian basin, this fruit has been categorized as the top superfood because it delivers many of the nutrients and compounds that our body means in order to maintain a healthy metabolic process and to a certain level slow down the aging process, this fruit was referred to as a natural product which should be used in order to achieve and maintain age defying beauty.
Not only did Opera Winfrey covered the many benefits that Acai provides, NBC reported that “the Anomabi” Indians have believed for centuries that this fruit helps women recuperate after birth and it is also able to deliver a great deal of energy to anyone who drinks of its juice; the Vogue magazine calls it the next big workout cocktail and the London Times said that Acai is able to deliver such a high nutritional value that makes other fruits blush with inadequacy, a statement which is well put.
The bottom line when it comes to this Brazilian berry is that it contains extremely high levels of antioxidants, omega-9, omega-9 and several other nutrients which have age slowing properties, can help lose weight and in recent laboratory studies an Acai extract triggered a self-destructive sequence amongst leukemia cells, this last finding may prove that Acai can do a lot more than just beautify your skin.
Meniscus Tears
What are the menisci?
The menisci are pieces of cartilage in the knee that play a vital role in athletes. They are two C-shaped structures that lie between the femur and tibia on the inside (“medial”) and outside (“lateral”) aspects of the knee. They predominantly consist of water and collagen fibers. Historically, the function of the menisci was unclear, and some even considered them to be vestigial remnants of embryonic tissue like the appendix. For this reason, complete excision of the meniscus (“total meniscectomy”) was not infrequently performed in the setting a symptomatic meniscus tear .
• Load Tranmission – the menisci are responsible for transmitting between 50% to 70% of the loads across the knee joint. In their absence, these loads are directly transmitted to the articular cartilage on the ends of the bones.
• Joint Stability – the menisci are secondary stabilizers of the knee in many planes, and become the primary stabilizer for front-to-back (“anteroposterior”) motion of the knee when the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is torn.
• Shock Absorption
• Joint Lubrication and Nutrition
What is the anatomy of the menisci?
The menisci are “wedge-shaped” pieces of cartilage that rest between the thigh bone (“femur”) and lower leg bone (“tibia”) in the knee joint. There are two menisci, a medial one on the “inside” of the knee and a lateral one on the “outside” of the knee. The medial meniscus is C-shaped, while the lateral meniscus is more semicircular in shape. Both rest on the tibial surface and are anchored to the bone at the front and back of the plateau (“meniscus roots”).
Each meniscus can be divided into portions based on (i) location within the knee, or (ii) blood supply. By location, the meniscus can be divided into a (i) posterior horn, (ii) body, and (iii) anterior horn. These terms are helpful to describe the location of meniscus tears. Tears in the posterior horn are the most common.
The blood supply of the meniscus comes from the periphery where it attaches to the lining of the knee joint (“capsule”). For this reason, the peripheral one-third of the menisci are generally well-perfused, while the inner aspects have a more limited blood supply and correspondingly limited potential for healing. These different locations moving from peripheral-to-central have been termed the “red-red”, “red-white”, and “white-white” zones. This classification becomes important when evaluating meniscus tears and considering their capacity for healing after a surgical repair.
Unfortunately, total meniscectomy in young patients has been shown to dramatically accelerate degenerative wear in the knee. Furthermore, various critical functions of the menisci to the maintenance of knee health have been well-established. These include:
What are meniscus tears in athletes?
A Meniscus tear is among the most common orthopaedic injury and has been colloquially referred to as “torn cartilage” in the knee. They have affected athletes of virtually every sport. While they are most commonly seen in the posterior horn, they can occur in any location and affect either the medial side, lateral side, or both.
In athletes, a meniscus tear usually is a traumatic origin. They result or abnormally high forces that fail the substance of the meniscus. While these are often the result of forceful twisting or pivoting movements, they can also occur with seemingly innocuous activities such as squatting or jogging. From baseball catchers to professional defensive lineman, virtually every sport and position player has been affected by this injury. Some names you will recognize include Osi Umeniyora, Johan Santana, Sedrick Ellis, and Shawne Merriman – all have battled meniscus tears in their athletic career.
In older patients, a meniscus tear may not be of traumatic origin but rather part of degenerative changes in the knee. These tears are often accompanied by some arthritic changes in the knee and are referred to as “degenerative” tears.
How is a meniscus tear classified?
A Meniscus tear can be classified in various ways – by anatomic location, by proximity to blood supply, etc. Various tear patterns and configurations have been described. These include:
• Radial tears
• Flap or Parrot-beak tears
• Peripheral, longitudinal tears
• Bucket-handle tears
• Horizontal cleavage tears
• Complex, degenerative tears
These tears can then further classified by their proximity to meniscus blood supply, namely whether they are located in the “red-red,” “red-white,” or “white-white” zones.
The functional importance of these classifications, however, is to ultimately determine whether a meniscus is REPAIRABLE. Given the critically important functions of the meniscus in athletes, it should be preserved and repaired whenever possible. The repairability of a meniscus is dependent upon a number of factors. These include:
• Age
• Activity Level
• Tear Pattern
• Chronicity of the tear
• Associated Injuries (Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury)
• Healing Potential
What injuries can accompany a meniscus tear in athletes?
While a torn meniscus can certainly occur in isolation, they are often accompanied by other injuries in the knee as well. In the setting of high-energy trauma, associated fractures of the proximal tibia (“tibial plateau”) can occur. Meniscus tears have been reported to be as common as 50% with these fractures.
A torn Meniscus often accompany tears of the anterior cruciate and/or collateral ligaments as well. The posterior horn of the medial meniscus is the secondary stabilizer to anteroposterior translation of the joint, and therefore becomes particularly vulnerable to injury with deficiency of the anterior cruciate ligament (the primary anteroposterior stabilizer of the joint).
How does a meniscus tear present in athletes?
A Meniscus tear can present in various ways. Sometimes a “popping” sensation is experienced by the athlete during a traumatic event. There is usually significant pain along the joint line on the side of the tear (medial or lateral). Sometimes the athletes can continue to walk on the knee, while other large tears may cause too much pain to allow for weightbearing. Sometimes the tear pattern can cause a portion of the meniscus to become entrapped between the joint surfaces or within the notch of the knee. In these cases, the knee is often locked and the athlete cannot flex or extend the knee. The classic signs to look for with a torn meniscus include:
• Pain, often along the joint line of the knee
• Swelling (“effusion” in the joint) often develops due to inflammation and/or bleeding from the injury
• Inability to fully extend or flex the knee without discomfort
• Locking or catching of the knee
• Weakness of the leg, particularly the quadriceps muscle. This may be evident when trying to perform a straight leg raise or walk up and down stairs.
In addition to examining for the above signs and symptoms, a physician may check the athlete’s ability to squat on the knee without discomfort. They doctor may also perform a McMurray’ Test in which the knee is bent, straightened, and rotated in an attempt to entrap the meniscus tear within the joint. If you have a meniscus tear, this movement may reproduce clicking and pain.
What imaging studies help to confirm the presence of a meniscus tear?
Plain x-rays (radiographs) of the knee can be useful to evaluate for the presence of associated injuries such as tibial plateau fractures or ligament avulsions. They will not, however, confir
m or rule out the presence of a torn meniscus.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the knee has become the gold standard of imaging studies for a meniscus tear. These high-resolution pictures from multiple perspectives allow for a greater than 95% sensitivity in detecting a meniscus tear. Furthermore, they provide valuable information regarding the tear pattern and configuration to help preoperative planning and assessment of the repairability of the tear.
MRI of the knee not only helps to define the tear, but allows for evaluation of the other important anatomical structures of the knee. The status of the collateral and cruciate ligaments, as well as the cartilage surfaces of the joint can be carefully evaluated to help design the best treatment plan.
How is a meniscus tear in athletes treated?
With this increased appreciation of meniscus function, surgical techniques have focused on preservation and repair whenever possible in athletes. Arthroscopy has allowed for various repair strategies with minimal invasion and excellent visualization. However, the tear pattern must be repairable and the tissue have the ability to heal for a repair to be successful. In addition, the age of the athlete, expectations, and associated injuries must be considered as well. For this reason, no definitive set of guidelines can be provided for determining which tears should not be treated, which should be repaired, or which should be partially excised (“partial meniscectomy”). However, some good general principles include:
• Rim width is the most important prognostic criteria for healing after meniscus repair. Therefore, peripheral, longitudinal tears within 3-mm (“red-red” vascular zone) of the meniscocapsular junction should be repaired. Longitudinal tears within 3 to 6-mm width (red-white zone) have less predictable success, but should still be considered for repair in younger patients.
• Tears more than 6-mm from the peripheral blood supply are generally avascular and are not suitable for repair.
• Acute, traumatic tears have an improved prognosis for healing compared to chronic, degenerative lesions.
• Longitudinal tears are more amenable to repair than the flap, horizontal cleavage, or complex degenerative patterns.
• The management of the radial tear is controversial. Large radial tears extending to the periphery are technically easy to repair and should be considered for repair in young patients to restore hoop stresses and load transmission function of the meniscus.
• Age should not be used as an absolute criteria for determining the feasibility of repair. While younger patients have a more favorable prognosis, successful healing has been reported in older patients.
• Higher rates of failure have been noted in the setting of unstable knees secondary to excessive shear forces that prevent healing. Therefore, an insufficient anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) should be reconstructed at the time of meniscus repair. Reconstruction of the ACL at the time of meniscus repair has been associated with a more favorable rate of meniscus healing.
• Partial thickness tears that are shallow and stable (
Learning Basic Accounting Principles
Accounting has been defined as, accounting professor at the University of Michigan, William A. Paton as having a basic function: ‘facilitating the administration of economic activity. This function has two closely related phases: 1) measurement and predispose to economic data, and 2) communicate the results of this process to interested parties.
As an example, a company’s accountants periodically measure the profit and loss for a month, quarter or fiscal year and publish these results in a profit and loss statement is called a statement. These statements include items such as accounts receivable (what was owed to the company) and accounts payable (what the company owe). It can also be quite complicated with subjects like retained earnings and accelerated depreciation. This at higher levels of accounting and organization.
Much of accounting but also deals with basic accounting. This is the process that records every transaction, every bill paid, every dime owed, every dollar and cent spent and accumulated.
However, the owners of the company, which may be individual owners or millions of shareholders are more concerned with summaries of these transactions, contained in the financial statement. The financial statement summarizes a company’s assets. A value of an asset is what it costs when it was acquired. The financial statement also records what the sources of the assets were. Some assets are in loans that have to be returned. The benefits are also an asset of the company.
In what is called double entry bookkeeping, the liabilities are also summarized. Obviously, a company wants to show a greater amount of assets to offset liabilities and profitability. The management of these two elements is the essence of accounting.
There is a system for doing this, not every company or individual can devise their own systems of accounting, the result would be chaos!
Becoming a Florida Lawyer – not an Easy Process
Becoming a Florida lawyer is very similar to becoming a lawyer in any other state and includes obtaining a four year degree from an accredited college (in the state of Florida these include Florida State University, Florida Technical College, and St. Thomas University to name just a few), gain acceptance into a law school that is recognized and accredited by the American Bar Association, graduate from the law school, and finally to pass the Florida Bar exam. This is not an easy process and only thirty percent of those individuals who begin the process actually complete it and become a practicing lawyer or attorney in the state of Florida.
There are thousands of accredited four year colleges in the state of Florida and they range from the huge Florida State University to the much small and private St Thomas University. However, they all offer four year degrees in any number of fields, sciences, or arts. Determining which college is right for you is a largely unique determination that takes into account the cost of tuition, the location of the university, scholarships offered, and ultimately academic acceptance. However, once a university or college has been decided upon, then the successful completion or the curriculum becomes important.
At this stage, it is not necessarily important what type of four year undergraduate degree is earned. While it is important to choose a discipline that encourages logical thinking, academic research, writing, public speaking, and interdisciplinary organization, it is not a requirement for ultimate success as a professional Florida lawyer. Programs that many future lawyers have found useful have been majors in humanities, social sciences, history, and political science. Again, at this stage of the process, it is not important what four year undergraduate degree is attained. It only matters that degree is successfully attained.
Once you have finished an undergraduate program, then you must get accepted into law school. Law school is usually an additional two year program. Acceptance into one of the two hundred or so law schools across the nation is based on the LSAT (Law Schools Admissions Test). This test is designed to test the attributes that a lawyer should have. It examines basic knowledge, logical thinking, and problem solving. It is largely considered to be one of the hardest admission tests that a lawyer will have to take. The higher the school then the better the chances of being accepted into a law school are. All law schools are not created equal. While they all offer the same basic program, some are much more famous and expensive than others. In Florida, law schools include St Thomas School of Law, Stetson University College of Law, and University of Miami School of Law.
Obviously after the successful entrance into a recognized law school, the next step to becoming a Florida lawyer is the completion of that program and earning a law degree. Earning a law degree is not easy and requires a broad knowledge of all legal standards and situations regardless of the intended field of the law student. It is therefore very challenging.
Even after graduating from law school, an individual is not fully recognized as a lawyer until he or she has passed the Florida Bar exam. This is an exam intended to test the basic knowledge and skills of a lawyer. A person can take this test as many times as necessary to receive a passing grade. Once a person has successfully completed this exam, he or she is a lawyer and can then practice law in Florida.
What Do Snakes And A Chicken Have To Do With Viral Marketing?
With mass communication being achievable with just the click of a mouse, the internet has become the worldwide marketplace. That is why most advertisers believe that viral marketing is the most effective way to get customers to buy your product. As Tom Kinnear, executive director of the Zell Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies at the University of Michigan tells Forbes.com, “It [viral marketing] can be referred to as word-of-mouth on steroids.”
The movie Snakes on a Plane is a good example. While the film did not do so hot at the box office it got a huge amount of buzz when people started writing songs and creating videos based on the title. When the media picked up on it, word of mouth for Snakes on a Plane took off like wildfire. This required no effort from the filmmakers after their initial advertising push. That is the essence of good viral marketing.
You may not have a movie studio or Samuel L. Jackson to help you out but there are ways you can adapt viral marketing to your internet business.
The Fun Page
If you are a serious marketer, and you do not have enough funding for a major advertisement, this is one of the best techniques that you can use. Make a page on your site with funny or interesting videos or images, or even create a mini game that is focused on your product. Be sure to include a tell a friend link to ensure that your fun page gets circulated. Creativity is the key. If your fun page is cool enough, you can be sure that you will get more hits for to your website.
Kind of Weird
Remember the Subservient Chicken? Burger King created a webpage that contained a video camera with a command line below it. On the site, you just typed what you wanted the subservient chicken to do, and voila, the chicken did it. People were born curious. If you have some idea in your head, do it. The Subservient Chicken became so popular that people forwarded the links to their friends, and all Burger King had to do was to maintain the website. The downside is this strategy might create bad publicity but as the old saying goes, bad publicity is still publicity.
Email Forward
Create a message with funny pictures or a video, and then send it to your friends or list of subscribers. If it is funny enough, you can be sure that this little message will reach a lot of people. Remember that the images or video should contain at least a brand logo or a website address. The best thing that you can do here is to include your name on the video itself, like for example a guy wearing a t-shirt with your brand name on it, or a bunch of funny pictures dealing with your products. Most forwarded e-mails are viral marketing strategies. In this technique, you can always be sure that your e-mails are going to be opened, because they came from the friends of the e-mail owner.
Free is Good
Most people search the internet with free as one of their keywords. Free stuff can boost the popularity of your website. There are a lot of items out there that you can give out for free. Creating a downloadable Flash game is one of the most used today. But of course, you should make it interesting, and make the people think that without this free stuff on their desktop, they’re missing out a lot.
Viral marketing may not answer all of your promotional needs, but it will surely help you in creating a buzz. It is cheap, easy and very effective. What viral marketing does so brilliantly is fuel our irresistible urge to tell somebody about a good experience. It is hard to find any advertising better than that.
Teeth Whitening – a Lot of Options – Which Ones are Right for You?
We all whiter teeth, and with so many products on the market, not to mention the procedures that your dentist may offer, who would have ever thought it could be a complicated decision.
Lets start with the right toothbrush. Dentist Nancy Rosen recommends “that power and manual toothbrushes should be replaced every three months.” Rosen continues, “people must select brushes with soft bristles rather than the medium ones which are too harsh on teeth and gums.”
Along with choosing the right brush, your habits at which you brush them are key as well. You should brush after every meal and don`t forget to floss. Flossing removes all of the material between the teeth which adds to your teeth decaying at a faster pace. Combining all of this will ensure an effective teeth whitening procedure.
If it is a wonderful, clean smile then you may want to follow some of these tips:
Fiber-rich apples, carrots, celery and cauliflower combine with saliva has shown in some studies to exfoliate surface stains, and greens such as spinach, lettuce and broccoli create a clear film on teeth that acts as a barrier against darkening.
You will want to avoid bleaching. Bleaching removes the teeth`s protective protein layer. Between treatments, eat light colored food. Food and drink that will stain a white shirt will do the same to your teeth, as will colored rinses and toothpaste.
Ok so you don`t have the money to pay your dentist to have your teeth whitened, and your dental insurance (if you are lucky enough to have it) won`t cover anything “cosmetic”. Johnson & Johnson makes the claim in its advertising that you can “whiten your teeth, while you walk your dog.” An attempt to promote sales of its teeth-whitening product called Listerine Whitening Quick Dissolving Strips. These strips can be found at your local pharmacy or where dental products are sold.
Not ready or don`t have enough time to use a whitening strip? Not to worry, now you can whiten fast with Rembrandt`s teeth whitening pen. You basically “write” on your teeth. The pen is available where dental products are sold.
Ok so you really don`t have the time to do it yourself, maybe you don`t feel comfortable doing it and/or you travel a lot for work. Not to worry, airports are getting in on the act. Spas located in airports now treat customers to everything from massages to teeth whitening between flights. So if you are traveler and you are feeling the anxiety that travel may cause, you may want to give it a shot. It may not make flying any easier for you, but at least you`ll have a nice smile 35,000 feet in the air.
With all of these options for teeth whitening, it poses one question, is it safe? In a recent study conducted by researchers from the University of Michigan, which measured the efficacy and safety of teeth whitening products. They used strips, gels and paint on films. The study showed that these products did indeed brighten teeth with minimal tooth and gum irritation the researchers stressed that the study only lasted two weeks and that long term affects could not be determined.
You have a lot to choose from, as there are many options. You should consult with your dentist before you make any decision.
