PostHeaderIcon Work at Home Mom Summer Survival Guide

Working at home during the summer creates challenges for the WAHM. As the summer begins, there’s a lot to keep the kids entertained and give Mom time to work on her business. As the summer progresses, however, choruses of ‘Mom I’m bored’ ring out, causing otherwise mild mannered Moms to throw up their hands in complete desperation; right before they start planning an escape route.

Moms can’t escape for too long however, and kids have an uncanny knack of finding the hiding spot anyway. So what can you do to keep your business in tact during the summer months when the cherubs are effectively running the show?

How flexible are you? No, I don’t mean can you play a mean game of Twister while baking a pan of blueberry muffins, but rather, how willing or able are you to adjust your normal work at home day to meet the ever changing demands of tireless children?

Leslie Spencer, founder of Home Based Working Hom, suggests using a laptop with a wireless internet connection. You’ll be a mobile mom, able to take your work anywhere your kids go.

Planning and preparation will make your life less stressful. Before summer vacation begins, do some research to find local youth programs being offered and enroll your kids. Make lists of ‘things to do’ and have ready all of the needed supplies so your school age kids can entertain themselves.

Be realistic. Come to terms with the fact that you may not be as productive during the summer, and schedule your work to make the best use of your time.

Summer challenges for WAHMs do not have to cripple your business. Find local groups and activities for your kids to participate in and remember, time with your kids will pass all too soon, and summer vacation is just one part of WAHM life.

PostHeaderIcon Making Better Web Graphics That Grab your Attention and Load Fast

Is it possible to create quality web graphics that grabs attention and load fast at the same time? take a look at the illustration samples at our site and see what I talking about

Understanding the basics of GIF and JPEG compression will not only help you choose the best format for your Web graphics but will also enable you to create graphics that look better and load faster. Many graphics programs and compression utilities allow you to compare an image in different formats with various palette and compression settings before you actually save the file. While this takes much of the guess work out of choosing the best format for an image, it’s still a good idea to have a basic understanding of how each type of compression works. With that knowledge, you can make changes to the graphic before compression takes place, creating an image that compresses to a smaller file size and looks better, too.

Optimize for Best Images

Q. I was asked a question by one of my customer’s earlier this year. How do I put together a quality web site with great pictures that don’t take a long time to load on older equipment or just in general?

As a general rule, the following guideline will give you the best quality images with the smallest file sizes: GIF: images with large areas of solid color, such as vector clip art. JPEG: images with many shaded or gradient colors, such as photos. GIF Compression & Optimization GIF compression is lossless. This means that there is no loss of information when the file is compressed. When decompressed the image will be the same as before compression. Use this file format to save line drawings, text, or even small photos.

The compression scheme for GIF format works by identifying repetitions or runs of color within the image and identifying these repetitions with an algorithm. The more repetition and the longer the color runs are, the smaller the image will be after compression. To better understand how this works:

JPEG Compression & Optimization

The JPEG format is most often used for photographs. When decompressed, the image will not be the same as before compression. It will have lost some of the information contained in the original file. Each time you save a JPEG image it will lose more information. For this reason, it is best to save an original of your image in a lossless format (such as TIF, PSD, etc.), and work from that file when making changes. JPEG compression does not work with runs of color, like GIF compression. Instead it breaks the image into zones and throws away subtle color differences. When saving an image in JPEG format, you can select how much compression to use and, therefore, how much information will be lost. The more the image is compressed, the more the quality is reduced but the smaller the file size becomes. This format has overhead, so it is not necessarily a good format for small photos. Generally images that are smaller than 100 x 100 pixels should be saved in GIF format. Sometimes experimenting is the only way to determine which format will give you the smallest file size with the best quality.

PostHeaderIcon Trade Show Education There is an Art to Exhibiting

Exhibiting at a trade show can help with branding your company. It also allows for introduction and marketing of your products and services. In essence it gives you a platform to spread the word about your company amongst interested show attendees.

However, you have to come realize with the slow economy you limited funds to market yourself but don’t want to be amateurish with a low quality trade show booth. Contracting the services of a display to an exhibit rental company can make the event more affordable while providing a professional image for your company. Do not let money be the barrier between you and a successful show.

At the show it is imperative that you make a good first impression. You never know when your next customer or an existing client might come walking by your trade show display. A perfectly designed trade show exhibit can set you apart from the crowd and can provide your company with an extra sense of professionalism.

You should always be aware of the show regulations. Make sure to ask the association about height limitations and other restrictions that may apply towards your display. It’s better to ask too many questions and be informed then to run into complications on the show floor. Many full service exhibit companies have the capabilities to handle all your show services and display option needs, just do some research and find reputable one.

You should take notice of you exhibit space. Are you in an aisle or end cap? How much space do you need for your display equipment, collateral, and promotional materials. Do you plan on using banner stands and literature racks these aspects are important factors in helping with the selection of the appropriate trade show display rental?

If possible a good way to get feel about the trade show and types of displays being used is to contact other exhibitors who are attending the show. Most business that isn’t direct competition with you will be more then willing to share their knowledge and experiences. While renting a display gives flexibility it’s always best to be prepared and fitted with the proper equipment.

Remember educating yourself on trade show marketing, show services, and regulations will help avoid conflicts. Education will pay dividends through cost savings and provide a greater return on your investment.

PostHeaderIcon The Digital Songwriter

A whole new style of composing music and writing lyrics has arrived in the form of digital songwriting.

By using hi tech home studio equipment and software, you can now record your music and lyrics at the same time as you actually write your songs.

In the Sixties and Seventies, the most any young songwriter could have hoped for, would have been a 10/50/50 song deal with a music publisher – any music publisher. Whether or not the songs would have been published was another matter. At that time, the ratio of works accepted but not actually published, may have been less than eight in every hundred. In reality, most songs acquired by publishers were left on the shelf to gather dust. If any were eventually published, mainly because an artist had covered (recorded) his work, it would have made the average songwriter feel like he’d won a week in heaven – especially if they had printed his music. If you could go back in a time machine and reveal to mister Sixties songwriter/producer that today he could not only record, arrange and mix his own songs on a virtual home studio, he could also publish, release, distribute and, with the aid of midi, print off the sheet music (in several keys) all on the same day – he would probably have had a heart attack!

So what is this thing called digital music and why did it have such an impact on the music industry? Believe it or not digital was first introduced as a kind of “upgrade” to its older cousin ‘ analog. Actually, there are still some recording artists and producers today who prefer analog claiming there’s a quality or originality to it that cannot be “captured” or reproduced using digital. Recordings in the Sixties, for example, are famous for having a distinctive analog sound of their own. Perhaps so – but most today, I would argue, prefer digital, not just for recording, but also for the advantages in transmitting, distributing, storing, retrieving, and even reconfiguring electronically.

You may get a better idea of digital if you compare it directly to analog. Think of analog as a speedometer on a car. The speed you’re traveling is revealed by the arrow moving round the dial. Digital, on the other hand, can only function by using zeroes and ones (0 or 1) and may be restricted in reading the values to a tenth in between numbers. One of the many difficulties which have now been overcome ‘ is in changing digital to analog and vice versa. Interestingly, a compact disc functions by using both analog and digital. The audio sound exists initially in analog. Then, the disc is encoded digitally. In reading the disc, the player converts the audio back to analog when the sound comes out of the speakers.

By recording and composing music at the same time, the digital songwriter has neatly bypassed many of the obstacles faced by his predecessors including the prospect of publishing his own works on his web site. By adapting to new technology – he’s also realized another great prospect: in recording the music he will also own the copyright in the masters (embodied performance). In doing so, he starts to cross into the producer/artist realm. Some may see this as an opportunity of reopening former days as an artist – and or promoting the name and product (new recordings) of a previous time. Whatever your reasons – if you’re approaching digital music as a performer/writer with a view to self publishing, there remains two extremely important questions: Is the product commercial? How do I market it? Both points are as relevant today as they have always been.

Knowing what is Commercial is something anyone can achieve with great accuracy through simple, regular research – and yes, using your instincts. Check your niche of the market and see what and who is selling. In making judgments on what is commercial, you need to trust your instincts, too. It’s not just what or who is selling the most, or in great numbers in a particular genre, it’s also about what or who is going to be selling the most, or in great numbers in the next six, twelve and twenty four month periods from now.

Marketing your product is something you can also learn as skillfully as creating commercial songs. Remember also, it’s not just a case of what is selling well in your own country (important as this is). You need to be thinking on an international level if you want to expand your selling rate significantly. The first thing, after publishing your product, is to start promoting your web site using lots of good solid links from other sites. Design the pages with one thought in mind: collect email addresses to build a sustained opt in fan base. Go all out to make your website appealing and well above the average looking site. Have regular up to date articles, photos and data about you or your band with information on forthcoming gigs. Respond quickly and enthusiastically to people emailing you with any questions. The more interest you create the stronger your fan base. Anyone who is serious about this can use auto responders. I have lots of friends who love to write and produce product – especially other artists. This means they can publish lots of different artists. If this is the area that interests you be sure to have an updated digital agreement to cover non-exclusive master rights. Once you decide to start, aim to build two main catalogs, one for publishing, and one for record licensing then watch your catalogs, profits and success rate grow.

PostHeaderIcon Glass Mosaic Tile Art: Andamento (huh? What's That?)

Making wonderful glass mosaic tile art is easy!  Let me show you how.

Andamento (Italian for “flow”) is the visual movement of your mosaic created by placing tesserae in specific patterns to achieve the desired image (a.k.a. “coursing” your tesserae).

Opus (Latin for “work of art or literary work”) is any work in any creative field, such as literature, architecture, music, and fine art.  In our world of mosaic art, opus refers to how we arrange our tesserae.  Different opera (the plural of opus) result in different flows.  Understanding the various opera allows you to properly plan your work to ensure you achieve the desired look.

The following opera terms are based on Latin.  Few people I know, including me, remember two minutes after rading about them what each term means.  It doesn’t matter what you call each style.  For example, instead of saying “Opus Regulatum,” you can call it “squares aligned like a brick wall.”  The point is to be aware of the types of opera, then plan which types give the results you want, and then create your masterpiece accordingly.

This articles merely describes the basic andamento types; whereas, the eBook provides visual examples.  Don’t get hung up on the names; simply be aware of the various styles and how your eyes react to each.  Plan your work to give the desired flow and effect.  I won’t try to describe in art-speak the effect that the eyes see in each opus because your eyes may interpret something completely different than mine.  Besides, I never understand so called connoisseurs when they use words like energy, strong, sharp, dynamic movement, and dynamic power to describe a particular opus.  I remember a pretentious guy who once told me, “Your lines are crisp and intense, and give the piece a provocative personality.”  I confidently responded, “That’s exactly what I was going for,” although I had no idea what he was talking about.  I felt I had to acknowledge what sounded like a compliment by pretending to understand his art-speak.

Surf the Internet for mosaic artists, study their work, and note the flow of their tesserae.  Pay attention to how each type of flow makes you feel.  Associate the flows with the feelings they stimulate in you.  Then, plan your own work using the flows for the feelings you hope to evoke in others.  Try mixing several types of opera into your work.  For example, try using Opus Regulatum for the border, Opus Palladianum for the background, and Opus Sectile for the focal point.

Opus Tesselatum is a square or rectangle pattern with grout lines aligned, such as a checkerboard.

Opus Regulatum is also a square or rectangle pattern but with grout lines staggered like a brick wall.  I sometimes use a variation of this opus as a background by enhancing the effect using light tesserae in the center and gradually darkening the tone to the border.

You’ll find inconsistencies with the definitions of tesselatum and regulatum in that some believe they’re reversed.  Those who believe as I do have sound justification.  For example, the Latin “tessella” means “small square piece of stone.”  The Latin “tessellatim” means “in a checkered or tessellated form.”  The modern “tessellate” means “arrange in a checkered pattern.”  Therefore, I’m comfortable being in the group that defines the two terms as noted above.  However, there’s another discrepancy, which is with the spelling of “tesselatum.”  Does it have one “l” or two?  I use one “l” to stay consistent with the other “…latum” opera described below.  Again, it doesn’t matter what you call them or how you spell them as long as you understand that the two styles exist and they each can arouse different feelings when used in mosaics.

Opus Reticulatum is similar to opus regulatum or tesselatum but with slanted lines.

Opus Sectile is either a piece of tessera cut to one specific shape or several tesserae of varying sizes cut to shapes that fit together like puzzle pieces.

Opus Vermiculatum is typically a single row of tesserae following the outline of a focal point or main feature of the mosaic.  Some artists use several rows to create the halo effect and add emphasis to the focal point.  The background is usually done with a contrasting opus, such as opus regulatum.  “Vermis” is Latin for worm, so think of opus vermiculatum as a worm surrounding your focal point.

Opus Musivum is opus vermiculatum extended out to fill the background, either all the way to the borders or to secondary focal points.

Opus Classicum combines opus vermiculatum with opus regulatum or opus tesselatum.

Opus Palladianum uses similar shapes laid in an irregular pattern.  In my opinion, triangle like shapes with relatively equal grout spacing works best for this opus.

Opus Circumtactum uses interlocking fan like patterns for the background.

Remember, the eBook gives visual examples of each type of andamento described above, making it so much easier to understand its associated flow.

Making mosaic art is easy. You can do it.  Yes, you can!  Let me show you how.

Oprah says that this background made her the successful woman that she is today.
